As a bride, you've taken special care to ensure your own dress fits to a T. Make sure the same attention is given to your bridesmaids' dresses, too. Ill-fitting bridesmaid dresses will be uncomfortable for your attendants, and distracting during the ceremony. So make sure everyone looks—and feels—lovely in the dresses you've chosen. We can help with that. Custom alterations from Sew4U will have your entire wedding party looking photo-ready for the big day!

Standard Sizes Do Not Fit All
You may have ordered each dress in your bridesmaids' respective sizes, but that doesn't mean all of your attendants are going to have a guaranteed perfect fit. Dress sizes are designed to correspond to standard measurements, but not everyone is standard—in fact, most women aren't.

Height, body shape and weight distribution all impact how well any given size will look on any given body. A size 10 dress, for example, may fit three size-10 women differently. One woman may have a comfortable fit in the skirt but find the bodice too tight around the bust. Another woman may have the opposite problem, with a loose bodice and tight skirt. Yet another woman might have a great fit all around, but with a length that doesn't accommodate her height.

There are also other reasons bridesmaid dresses may need to be altered:

  • Variation in sizing among dressmakers, leading to an expected fit being larger or smaller than anticipated
  • Weight gain or weight loss after purchase of the dress
  • Body changes due to pregnancy
  • Accommodations for a bridesmaid's unique needs—such as adding a lace trim to a V-neck for modesty, or adding a sash to a strapless dress to cover a scar or tattoo

Scheduling Alterations

Bring your bridesmaids in close enough to your wedding date that they won't be likely to experience any radical size changes between then and the big day, but far enough out so that you will still have a comfortable time cushion. We typically recommend that you schedule an appointment for your bridesmaids (or have them schedule their own appointments individually) 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding date.

When the bridesmaids come in for alterations, they should bring the undergarments, shoes and accessories they plan to wear with the dress. This will let us know what we need to accommodate in our adjustments. The shoes, in particular, will help us know how much we may need to hem or let out a hem.
