Restoration Runway 2012: Timeless 01/19/2012
_ Last year, Amy and I were honored to be one of the sponsors for Restoration Runway. This is a fashion show put on by Restoration Place Ministries to raise money for counseling service. This is a non-profit organization providing Christ-centered counseling and support services to women in Greensboro and surrounding areas who are suffering in ways directly related to their femininity. This center is filled with a wonderful group of professional counselors that offer a vital service in our community. Since the fashion shows theme this year is Timeless, there will be apparel shown from several decades through the 20th century to the current decade. This year, Amy Gilbert is serving on the Fashion Show committee. She is helping to pull together a variety of apparel representing the different eras. Amy will also design and construct some of the apparel you will see in the show. Angela Thomas will be the Emcee again this year. She did a terrific job last year! The entire event was a huge success and a testament to God’s work at Restoration Place Ministries. You’ve dreamed about your wedding day all your life; worked out all the details in your head. Maybe you’ve imagined the perfect gown and now it’s time to start the search for it. Or, possibly you have no idea what kind of gown to choose. Planning for a wedding is stressful enough, so choosing your wedding gown shouldn’t add to the stress. Consider the following tips to assure you choose a gown that is not only stunningly beautiful, but will fit like it was made just for you. 1) Your dress should be tailored, not just fitted. The helpful salespeople in the bridal wear shops may or may not have the experience to offer the best advice on the right style or the knowledge to decide if it can be tailored the fit properly. Before purchasing, take your gown to an expert bridal tailor. 2) Strapless may not be the best choice, depending on how well it fits your décolletage. Do you really want to spend your wedding day hoisting up the strapless bodice? You certainly don’t want your ‘girls’ to be falling out! If there isn’t any talking you out of strapless, consider having removable spaghetti straps custom made so that you can attach them at the reception, so there aren’t any ‘accidents’ while dancing and hugging folks. Also, if there is a little too much skin showing at the neckline, lace or silk can be added to raise the neckline just enough. 3) Be open-minded when trying on gowns. You want to find a dress that is the most appropriate for your body type. You will look so much more beautiful in a gown that is truly meant for you, as opposed to a gown that looks great on the rack, but doesn’t do you justice. Even try on gowns that aren’t on your wish list. You may be surprised! 4) Body tape, body tape, body tape! On the big day, have body tape on hand for any accidents that do occur. You can tape the gown to you at any spots that are not cooperating. 5) When you try on your gown, can you reach out to hug without tearing the gown? Can you reach down toward your toes without falling out of the bodice? Can you sit in a chair and breathe normally? Be sure to consider more than just how the dress looks. 6) Have you found a great gown on sale, but it’s too big? Don’t assume it can or cannot be altered. Tailoring involves more than just ‘taking up’ the extra fabric. Ask if you can check out the gown and make an appointment with an alteration shop that specializes in bridal tailoring. At Sew4U, we offer free consultation by appointment. Please give us a call if you would like us to offer expert advice on choosing the right gown for your body type and expectations. We had the pleasure of working with Brittany Vandergrift on this incredible beaded gown. Her aunt had worn it several years ago to a military ball. It had sleeves and was full length. Sherry, our formal wear expert, removed the sleeves and shortened the dress to just above the knee. The work required several hours of skillful beading. The result is a stunning, updated beaded gown! Brittany was thrilled with the result and is looking forward to wearing it to her own special event. A Different Kind of Dress 02/18/2011
This week Sew4u's sister company, Window Works Studio, Inc., created a different kind of dress. We made six, lace up slipcovers for a set of dining room chairs. Sew4u has laced up many brides over the years. It's neat to be lacing up a chair. The slipcover has gathered sections over each front leg, flaring out like a skirt. The backs were laced up with matching grosgrain ribbon. Slipcovers are a great way to get extra mileage out of your furniture and totally change the feel of a room. Recently one of our clients, Cheryl Hucks brought in a mink coat that needed to be redesigned. The coat was too long, too boxy and too "big" in the shoulders. We were able to shorten the coat to the appropriate length, add darts in the back to make the coat fitted at the waist and shorten the shoulder seam. The mink coat looks awesome on this lovely lady! We have had past clients with similar issues. Fur coats can be updated and repaired in many ways to give them new life. Spring is around the corner, but there are still cold days ahead. Let us know if you have a coat that needs the "Sew4u" touch! 2011 prom season-here we come! 01/26/2011
